Winning Ways to Beat Holiday Stress

The holiday season may be the most festive time of year,
but with the longer check-out lines and extended To-Do lists,
we spend more time fighting stress than spreading cheer.

We get so caught up creating the perfect holiday
Hunting the malls for the perfect gifts, preparing the perfect feasts
Eager to meet the grandiose visions of what the perfect holiday should be

Maybe the grandiose visions are not as realistic as they once used to be
Maybe by simplifying, you’ll be less stressed and fatigued
But what can you do about all the stress you ask
Let’s look at the warning signs and put you to task

The cultural expectations start weighing you down
You eat too much, drink too much and start losing enthusiasm
Your head starts to hurt, your muscles are tense,
Balancing work, family and holiday obligations is getting way too intense

So my advice is slow down and take a step back
Stop trying to be so darn perfect and believing it’s all up to you
Sit down with your family weeks in advance
and say "hey, let’s decide what we each will do"

YES, you can delegate cooking or shopping to others
You can encourage families to host pot luck dinners
Plan ahead, simplify and focus on what’s truly important
And you and your family will all come out holiday winners

5 Tips for a Healthy Holiday Weekend

Holiday weekends often mean family and friends coming together to eat, drink and be merry surrounded by the sizzling sounds of meat, chicken and fish on the grill, potato and pasta salads and who could forget good old corn on the cob and plenty of beer, wine and coolers to go around. But as one of my weight loss coaching clients recently asked me, “How can I enjoy a holiday weekend celebration and still manage to stay healthy and control my weight?”  Let’s look at how you can make your celebrations work for your health and weight without feeling either hungry or deprived.

Here are five tips to consider for your holiday weekend celebrations:

1.    Watch out for beer, wine, coolers and other alcoholic beverages. Alcohol is not only high in calories it also impairs your judgment which can lead to making poor food choices or overeating. This doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a drink with your meal. What it does mean is that if you’re used to having a few beers and/or a few glasses of wine, try having one half to two thirds of what you would normally have. By slowly cutting back on the quantities or replacing it with a non-alcoholic low calorie beverage, you’ll be saving yourself lots of extra calories and yet you won’t feel totally deprived. Peer pressure can become an issue when drinking alcohol is what is expected by your peer group. Be strong. They will have to adjust to your new habits as well.

2.   Choose fatty cuts of meat and smoked or cured meats like bacon, bologna, hot dogs, ham, corned beef, luncheon meats, and sausage in VERY limited quantities on a VERY limited basis. The reason you want to be careful when choosing these foods is because they are generally high in saturated fat, salt and calories all of which DO NOT contribute to good health and effective weight control. You’d be much better off to choose leaner cuts of meat, chicken, turkey or fish instead and avoid highly salted foods where possible. If you just can’t give up that juicy hotdog or sausage, then treat yourself, but have half of what you normally would.  That will still be a success.

3.    Watch out for refined grains including white bread, white rice and white pasta. Choose whole wheat alternatives wherever possible to get the added fiber which helps to make you feel fuller. If you’re not sure what the host is going to be serving, then bring your own whole wheat hamburger buns and offer to bring a green salad or a vegetable or fruit tray so you’re guaranteed to have at least a few healthy low calorie choices that you can fill up on and help offset your higher calorie choices.

4.    Stay clear of items with creamy salad dressings, mayonnaise, and butter that are high in fat content. If you can’t avoid them completely, eat them in half or less than half the amounts you would normally eat. This will help to save extra calories as well.  Remember, this also includes all the creamy potato and pasta salads commonly found at most barbecues.

5.   Avoid foods high in salt such as most cheese spreads and cheeses, salty chips, nuts, and pretzels. If you can’t resist then be sure to not position yourself near the food tables. Sometimes the best strategy is to just walk away.

It may seem like there’s lots to think about when all you really want to do is just eat and enjoy. However, making healthy choices does take some work on your part, but is your health and self-esteem not worth the effort?  Follow these tips as listed above and with each healthy choice you make you will be one step closer to better health and a slimmer you.

Surprising healthy BBQ tip in time for Father’s Day

Thinking of doing the big BBQ cookout for Father’s Day this weekend? I started browsing the net for some great healthy hints to share and this one may surprise you. Be sure to check out the whole article from delish.com.

A hamburger doesn’t have to be oversized or loaded with fatty toppings to be a good burger. You may think that the easiest way to lighten a beef burger is to just switch to ground turkey, but that isn’t always true. Not all ground turkey is as light as you may believe ? make sure you’re purchasing ground turkey breast (versus “ground turkey” that may also include the darker meat and skin). Regular ground turkey has more fat and calories than 93% lean ground beef. So if you prefer beef, choose the extra-lean ground beef or ground sirloin and top with crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, and reduced-fat cheese…

Some Sweet Hints for a Healthy Easter

With Easter comes the traditional abundance of sweet treats such as hot cross buns, chocolate Easter eggs, chocolate Easter bunnies, oh and did I mention chocolate?? This makes it hard not to over-indulge, especially if you struggle with food or weight issues or simply want to maintain a healthy lifestyle. So how can you avoid these challenges? Here are a few sweet hints for a healthy Easter.

Keep holiday treats out of sight:
If you struggle with food or weight issues, it's likely that you find it difficult to resist food when it is in front of you, especially when it comes to sweets. By leaving bowls of candy or bags of chocolate eggs or bunnies or hot cross buns on the kitchen counters, coffee tables or anywhere else where it is in plain view, you are putting yourself in what I call a "dangerous food situation". If you see it, you will be more likely to eat it then if it is out of sight.

Don’t let the office sweets control you: The workplace poses challenges for those facing food or weight issues with people bringing in their treats to the office. Sometimes there is a specific treat table set up just for this reason or people leave the treats openly visible on their desks. If you know you will have to pass by the treat table or talk to someone with treats on their desk, pop a sugarless candy in your mouth beforehand. If your mouth is already filled and busy with the sweet candy, you will be more conscious of putting anything else in your mouth and be less likely to reach for the treats mindlessly.

Avoid being over-hungry: Whether you’re entertaining or a guest, be sure to eat regular meals throughout the day so that you’re not a bottomless pit by the time the meal or treats are served. Arriving over-hungry is again a "dangerous food situation". Instead, have a small healthy snack and some water to partially fill your stomach before the main meal so that you are less likely to over-indulge on both the meal and the sweets.

Minimize stress: As Easter is a time for family gatherings, you may be susceptible to undue stress with the typical high expectations of how the family gathering “should” go. You may believe that everyone “should” get along and everything “should” go perfectly from the perfectly cooked ham or lamb to the perfectly behaved children. However, expectations don’t always meet reality. Let go of your need for perfection as this will only create unwanted stress. When you’re overstressed, you will be more likely to turn to food for comfort and over-indulge in too much of the less healthy choices.

By avoiding these dangerous food situations and minimizing your stress, you will be able to enjoy a sweet but much healthier Easter with far less of the sweets and other over-indulgences than you would normally experience. Happy holidays!

Don't Let Your 'Not Now' Become Your 'Never'

Martin Luther said, "How soon 'not now' becomes 'never'"

How true is this quote? For example, how many times do you think about doing a workout and you say 'not now' or you'll do it 'later' and then it 'never' happens?

This kind of 'not now' attitude can be paralyzing. We have the best of desires and intentions but due to our own either fears, laziness or mixed up priorities, we just never seem to get ahead and reach our goals.

Watch this video below where you'll find some questions to think about and 5 Steps to help you break free from your 'Not Now' attitude. If you have questions and/or would like to share your answers with me, send me an email at info@roslynfranken.com.
